December 4, 2013: Wine in BC Grocery Stores

Wine in BC Grocery Stores

On November 28, 2013 BC’s Parliamentary Secretary, John Yap and the Ministry of Justice announced that grocery store liquor sales will be recommended for BC.  This comes as one of seventy changes to be proposed under the recent Liquor Policy Review the BC government underwent in Fall of this year.  The remaining changes will not be announced until 2014.

Consumers spoke loud and clear during the review, but how this looks once enacted is still speculation.  If you read the press release (thanks to www.winelaw.ca website) you find that the government is proposing maintaining the same cap on licenses in the province.  How will this be possible?  What impact will this change have on LRS stores, private wine stores, BC restaurants and BC wineries?

Bring your insight, your questions and your comments to tonight’s #BCWineChat from 8-9pm on Wednesday, December 4, 2013.

November 27, 2013: Open Forum

October 30, 2013: The BC Wine Authority

HERE’S HOW THE CHAT WENT:

The BC Wine Authority

Unless you are a BC winery chances are you have never heard of the BC Wine Authority.  As its website states, it is an independent regulatory authority to which the BC government has delegated the enforcement of our wine regulations in BC.

Included in wine regulations are winery inspections, running the tasting panels for VQA wines, which varieties are allowed to carry the VQA designation, winemaking regulations (minimum brix levels, blending rules etc), prohibited additives to wine, designation of sub appellations, and various other regulations around specific products like Icewine, sparkling wine and fortified wines.

Pretty geeky stuff if you are a consumer but pretty important if you are a winery.

If you are a winery we’d love to have you join us tonight.  It will, no doubt, be a frank discussion.

October 23, 2013: Last Chance to be Heard: BC Gov Wraps Up Liquor Review

HERE’S HOW THE CHAT WENT:

Last Chance to be Heard: BC Gov Wraps Up Liquor Review

It has been almost 2 months since the British Columbia government began a comprehensive review or our province’s liquor regulations.  Early in September we did a #BCWineChat about what you’d like to see changed and now that the review window is closing we thought it would be good for you to get one last chance to speak up, let the government know what is REALLY important to you.

Join us at 8pm Wednesday for an hour of discussion about this very important review process.  After all, you are the most important stakeholder being consulted…the voting public.

April 24, 2013: What Can We Do To Strengthen Our BC Wine Industry?

HERE’S HOW THE CHAT WENT:

What Can We Do To Strengthen Our BC Wine Industry?

We are a great industry but there are many things that can be done to strengthen our industry.  What can each winery, store, restaurant, government agency and consumer do to make this great BC wine industry even better than it is now?

It is election time and you can be assured that some of the #BCPoli will be tuning in to our chat on Wednesday at 8pm.  Be constructive or critical–anything goes this week…but remember the goal is to find ways to make this industry even stronger.
